TryHackMe is a great resource for hands-on practice in different areas. So far, I’ve completed ‘Pentesting Fundamentals’, ‘Junior Security Analyst Intro’ and am now working on the three-part Linux series. I’ve completed the first two “rooms” (which is what THM calls a module for learning a certain focus, complete with a virtual machine for running exercises), which correspond to ‘Linux Fundamentals’ part 1 and 2. You only get free access to the virtual machine provided by THM for one hour each day, and I was almost done with the third room when my hour expired. So, I’ll have to pick up again tomorrow- in my way of thinking, it’s a good motivator to login and practice with THM for at least one hour a day!
I like the hands-on approach of the THM “courses”. There’s no fluff- the information provided is straight to the point and does not hold your hand. This is a good thing, since one only has one hour to complete exercises that are quite time-consuming. In one of the exercises in ‘Linux Fundamentals part 3’ (the third room of the Linux series), I used the room provided VM to SSH into a second “attack” VM, using provided credentials. Once I had access to this second box, I was able to view running processes, practice different process commands. Really good focus for learning Linux fundamentals.
